“The music of Snaggle, a fruitful sextet based in Toronto, translates into mature compositions and stupendous executions. The members of the band, virtuosos in their respective instruments, resort to a laudable sense of unity and superior taste to creatively orchestrate the nine pieces of The Long Slog, their sophomore feature album… In a certain moment they’re confronting Miles Davis with Medeski Martin & Wood; in the other, you may find the Red Hot Chili Peppers colliding with Incognito or Mahavishnu Orchestra.”
– Filipe Freitas – Jazz Trail (New York, USA)

SNAGGLE — Toronto’s unique award-winning 6-man electric-jazz powerhouse — has, in recent years, often been referred to by media as “Canada’s answer to Snarky Puppy”. Fully embracing the comparison, SNAGGLE will pay tribute to SNARKY PUPPYs multi-Grammy winning impact on the international electric-jazz scene on Fri-Nov-10, 9pm ($15 door, $10 adv list) at Toronto’s Junction Music Hall (2907 Dundas St. W.) taking listeners on a journey though SNARKY PUPPY’s most beloved tunes. Expect to hear SNAGGLE interpretations of an assortment of compositions from albums such as ‘Bring us the Bright’, ‘The World is Getting Smaller’, ‘Tell Your Friends’, ‘Ground Up’, and ‘We Like it Here’ showcasing an exciting cross-section of Snarky’s ground breaking and influential grassroots electric-jazz visions. All arrangements were painstakingly hand orchestrated by SNAGGLE bandleader Nick Maclean, a 25-year old rising star in the Toronto jazz piano community. This performance will additionally feature acclaimed Toronto/Brooklyn jazz iconoclast & Browntasauras label exec Brownman Ali, heralded as “Canada’s preeminent jazz trumpet player” by the NYC Village Voice, as well as award-winning DJ General Eclectic (Jason Sanders) spinning his hand-picked, always perfectly chosen tracks whenever the band’s not on stage — making this a night of funkified electric-jazz audiences will not want to miss!

– Sleeper
– Tio Macaco

==================================
Based in Toronto, SNAGGLE, under the leadership of in-demand 25 year old jazz pianist Nick Maclean, is a 6-piece electric-jazz-funk ensemble often described by media as “Canada’s answer to Snarky Puppy”. Sporting an all-original repertoire the group has a fearless and muscular yet introspective sound likened to a cross between electric-era Miles Davis and Rage Against the Machine. Taking elements from a wide variety of musical sources including jazz, funk, rock, and metal, SNAGGLE contextualizes them within the improvisational and spontaneous elements of the jazz ideology. Their uniquely brash and infectious brand of jazz-funk is a melodically driven sound which incorporates primal groove qualities more commonly associated with pop and rock, swinging their live show from quietly contemplative all the way to explosively fierce, sometimes all within the same tune. The line-up of players in SNAGGLE includes some of the hottest twenty-somethings on the Toronto scene, representing the next generation of irreverent, boundary pushing Canadian players standing side-by-side internationally acclaimed veteran trumpet iconoclast Brownman Ali. SNAGGLE has been in high demand in the Canadian jazz festival circuit, and has been performing regularly in and around the Toronto area since 2013. Most recently the band was honoured to be the recipient of a Gold-standard Global Music Award for their recent album “THE LONG SLOG”. Both “THE LONG SLOG” and their recent Christmas single “CHRISTMAS TUNE” have been seeing much international critical acclaim since their release (both releases on Browntasauras Records).

About BROWNMAN and BROWNTASAURAS RECORDS
http://www.Brownman.com
==================================
Trinidadian-born, NYC-schooled & heralded as “Canada’s preeminent Jazz trumpeter” by NYC’s Village Voice, multi-award winning trumpet player Brownman Ali stands at the forefront of innovation in the Canadian jazz community. A protégé to his teacher, Grammy-winning trumpet legend, Randy Brecker, he tirelessly leads 7 unique ensembles of his own including the internationally acclaimed, Miles Davis influenced, BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO. In 2009 he launched his own record label: Browntasauras Records, which saw the Electryc Trio’s two now celebrated recordings garner substantial accolades and press. The label is now a home to all his ensembles as well as the newly signed SNAGGLE. Now, using the label as a breeding ground for new and visionary talent in the modern jazz realm, Browntasauras and Brownman himself are widely regarded as vanguards for the evolution of Jazz in Canada.

About DJ GENERAL ECLECTIC
==================================
Known widely as a phenonemal DJ in the Toronto community, General Eclectic’s sets on the decks prove that he lives up to his name — a truly eclectic selector. On paper some of the cuts he chooses might not seem to work together, but he creates a context in which they do, and manages to tell a story through his choices. He manages to thread together rare descarga grooves, classic ska tunes, revered Fela Kuti Afrobeat numbers and rare James Brown jams … even the odd Nina Simone song. Put another way: The man knows how to rock a party on so many levels, it’s astounding.

“… SNAGGLE is most impressive!  The music on Long Slog is very, very challenging, yet groovy, soulful & exploratory at the same time…. Extremely well performed, written and executed.  Reminds me of a band I used to play in!”

Jazz Festival 2016 Poster.jpg

Big show coming up! On June 28th we’re playing at Mây as part of the Toronto Jazz Festival and to sweeten the deal, our longtime producer and trumpet player extraordinaire Brownman Ali will be our special guest!

SNAGGLE with special guest Brownman Ali

This ensemble juxtaposes gentle melodies with hard funk and ties it all together with some creative and exciting improvisation. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Brown (his full bio’s below) — he is an incredibly accomplished trumpet player, musician & composer and when he’s not touring the world with the titans of the music industry (Jay-z, Paul Simon, Dave Matthews Band to name only a few) he’s got some killer projects on the go including our favorite – the BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO. So make sure you don’t miss it, 8:00pm, $10 cover!

Hi everyone, we are so excited to announce that we are going to be recording our 2nd album in collaboration with the mighty Brownman Ali! It’s long past time we had a second album brewing but we need your help. Releasing an album costs a reasonable amount of money and unfortunately none of us Snagglers have managed to marry rich. There are a lot of cool perks to check out including merch, exclusive content, lessons, and even one where you get to hang out in the recording booth during the session!
