Acclaimed jazz / hip-hop trumpet player BROWNMAN ALI will once again lead an all-star quartet through his popular annual Halloween Thriller concert. The much lauded BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO + 1 will perform the entire Michael Jackson “Thriller” recording, interpreted and re-worked in the Miles Davis-esque fashion this multiple National Jazz Award winning improviser has become known for. In addition to the quartet performing Thriller top to bottom, other MJ classics will be featured through the night for this unique Halloween jazz party series. Costumes and Thriller video dance moves encouraged.

Widely regarded as a vanguard for the evolution of Jazz in Canada, Toronto’s own BROWNTASAURAS RECORDS presents three of its most dynamic and explosive electric-jazz ensembles: BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO, SNAGGLE & MODUS FACTOR for an evening of intensely funkified music. The label, formed in 2009 by acclaimed jazz trumpet player BROWNMAN ALI, was initially created as a home for the 8 group he leads. In 2015 he opened the doors to other groups he performs with being signed in an attempt to help catalyze the creation of new jazz art. Now the label is home to a myriad of envelope pushing band-leaders, all of whom feature Brownman in their ensembles.

From the improvisational bedlam of Modus Factor, to the highly diverse compositional odysseys of Snaggle, to the visceral power of the Brownman Electryc Trio, the Browntasauras Presents: will give each ensemble the opportunity to showcase their own unique sounds. Then — as the night progresses — audiences will start to see Browntasauras musicians all guesting in other ensembles. Expect to see the Modus bass player with the Brownman Electryc Trio, the Snaggle keyboardist sitting in with Modus, and the Electryc Trio drummer playing with Snaggle, making this a UNIQUE offering of exploratory, cross-pollinated electric-jazz, the likes of which Toronto has never seen before.      We’re releasing our brand new Holiday Season single “Christmas Tune” at Toronto’s May Cafe on Sun-Dec-11, 8pm! Far from being a typical Holiday Season release, “Christmas tune” is a commentary on some of the defining characteristics of modern commercial Christmas music, much of which are written in major keys, and drenched in so much saccharin that it red-lines the “happy-happy” meter. Instead, our bandleader Nick Maclean’s composition presents an antithesis to that Holiday writing approach — an eclectic and multifaceted exploration of the full spectrum of human emotion. This performance will feature label exec and “Canada’s preeminent jazz trumpet player” (NYC Village Voice) Brownman Ali, and will include a cross-section of the entire “The Long Slog” recording for those that missed the Oct CD Release making this a night of funkified electric-jazz audiences will not want to miss!

snaggle at monarchsOn June 17th Snaggle will once again be bringing their brash sound back to Monarch’s Pub. Snaggle is a 6 piece funk-fusion ensemble that takes influences from Snarky Puppy, Miles Davis and everything in between. This ensemble juxtaposes gentle melodies with hard funk and ties it all together with some creative and exciting improvisation. So make sure you don’t miss it, 7:00pm, no cover!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Brown (his full bio’s below) — he is an incredibly accomplished trumpet player, musician & composer and when he’s not touring the world with the titans of the music industry (Jay-z, Paul Simon, Dave Matthews Band to name only a few) he’s got some killer projects on the go including our favorite – the BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO.
