SNAGGLE feat. BROWNMAN ALI (Toronto)

We’re back! We’ll be playing a show, our first since the start of the pandemic on Sat-Mar-12 at the Supermarket in Toronto! Here are the deets:

SNAGGLE, a brash and irreverent multi-award winning electric-jazz/funk ensemble under the leadership of 29-year old fast rising piano star Nick Maclean — often described by media as ‘Canada’s answer to Snarky Puppy’ — hits the stage in Toronto for an exciting and electrifying show at the Supermarket on SAT-MAR-12. This performance will feature “Canada’s preeminent jazz trumpet player” (NYC Village Voice) & Browntasauras Records label exec Brownman Ali, as well as an all-original and uniquely infectious repertoire which swings their live show from quietly contemplative all the way to explosively fierce – sometimes all within the same tune. A night of funkified electric-jazz audiences will not want to miss!

:: Nick Maclean – synthesizers
:: Brownman Ali – electric trumpet
:: Jacob Chung – tenor sax
:: Jay Yoo – electric guitar
:: Dane Wedderburn – 6-string electric bass
:: Riley O’Connor – drum

Nick Maclean’s Sum of One – Chocalet Citeh

The second ‘Sum of One’ video is up with lot’s more multitracked keyboard madness! This time I cover one of my favourite Brownman Ali compositions, his tribute to comedian and social commentator Chris Rock: CHOCALET CITEH! Make sure to stick around to the end where a very special guest performer makes a cameo appearance!

(originally released on the Brownman Electryc Trio’s 2013 release Gravitation).

With live performance being what it is at the moment this is still my only life-line to electric jazz performance and I’m enjoying the hell out of it.

A special thanks to Brownman for his insights into the composition and his valuable input into the drum programming!

Just in case any of our Ottawa peeps happened to see us featured in the latest issue of ‘Ottawa Jazz Happenings’ – we are not scheduled, nor were we ever scheduled to play a show at the Avant-Garde Bar tomorrow evening and we’re not really certain how that information got there. Sorry to disappoint and hope to see you soon!

==============
THE LONG SLOG
“The music of Snaggle, a fruitful sextet based in Toronto, translates into mature compositions and stupendous executions. The members of the band, virtuosos in their respective instruments, resort to a laudable sense of unity and superior taste to creatively orchestrate the nine pieces of The Long Slog, their sophomore feature album… In a certain moment they’re confronting Miles Davis with Medeski Martin & Wood; in the other, you may find the Red Hot Chili Peppers colliding with Incognito or Mahavishnu Orchestra.”
– Filipe Freitas – Jazz Trail (New York, USA)
