We’re back! We’ll be playing a show, our first since the start of the pandemic on Sat-Mar-12 at the Supermarket in Toronto! Here are the deets:
SNAGGLE, a brash and irreverent multi-award winning electric-jazz/funk ensemble under the leadership of 29-year old fast rising piano star Nick Maclean — often described by media as ‘Canada’s answer to Snarky Puppy’ — hits the stage in Toronto for an exciting and electrifying show at the Supermarket on SAT-MAR-12. This performance will feature “Canada’s preeminent jazz trumpet player” (NYC Village Voice) & Browntasauras Records label exec Brownman Ali, as well as an all-original and uniquely infectious repertoire which swings their live show from quietly contemplative all the way to explosively fierce – sometimes all within the same tune. A night of funkified electric-jazz audiences will not want to miss!
:: Nick Maclean – synthesizers :: Brownman Ali – electric trumpet :: Jacob Chung – tenor sax :: Jay Yoo – electric guitar :: Dane Wedderburn – 6-string electric bass :: Riley O’Connor – drum
The second ‘Sum of One’ video is up with lot’s more multitracked keyboard madness! This time I cover one of my favourite Brownman Ali compositions, his tribute to comedian and social commentator Chris Rock: CHOCALET CITEH! Make sure to stick around to the end where a very special guest performer makes a cameo appearance!
(originally released on the Brownman Electryc Trio’s 2013 release Gravitation).
With live performance being what it is at the moment this is still my only life-line to electric jazz performance and I’m enjoying the hell out of it.
A special thanks to Brownman for his insights into the composition and his valuable input into the drum programming!
Our bandleader Nick Maclean has put together a ‘one man band’ version of the SNARKY PUPPY talkbox-odyssey ‘Sleeper’ in his brand new series SUM OF ONE! If facemelting electric jazz is your jam make sure to give it a watch!
Snaggle’s bandleader guests with the Brownman Electryc Trio in Brownman’s hotly anticipated HALLOWEEN THRILLER TOUR! 6 cities, 6 shows exploring the seminal Michael Jackson Thriller record through the lens of electric jazz. You don’t want to miss this folks!
Acclaimed jazz / hip-hop trumpet player BROWNMAN ALI will once again lead an all-star quartet through his popular annual Halloween Thriller concert. The much lauded BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO + 1 will perform the entire Michael Jackson “Thriller” recording, interpreted and re-worked in the Miles Davis-esque fashion this multiple National Jazz Award winning improviser has become known for. In addition to the quartet performing Thriller top to bottom, other MJ classics will be featured through the night for this unique Halloween jazz party series. Costumes and Thriller video dance moves encouraged.
Just in case any of our Ottawa peeps happened to see us featured in the latest issue of ‘Ottawa Jazz Happenings’ – we are not scheduled, nor were we ever scheduled to play a show at the Avant-Garde Bar tomorrow evening and we’re not really certain how that information got there. Sorry to disappoint and hope to see you soon!
We’re extremely humbled and honoured to announce that we are a nominee in this year’s The Independent Music Awards in the Funk/Fusion/Jam category for our latest release THE LONG SLOG! An enormous heartfelt thank you to everyone who worked on the record and those who’ve been a part of the band’s continued journey!
In other news our bandleader and Browntasauras comrades in the Nick Maclean Quartet – a HARD SWINGING Herbie Hancock-influenced modern jazz group – are about to head out on a CD Release tour to Kingston (Thr-Feb-15), Montreal (Fri-Feb-16), Ottawa (Sat-Feb-17), and Cobourg (Sun-Feb-18) to celebrate the release of their hot new disk RITES OF ASCENSION! If that sounds like something you’re into make sure to check out the full details here!
“The music of Snaggle, a fruitful sextet based in Toronto, translates into mature compositions and stupendous executions. The members of the band, virtuosos in their respective instruments, resort to a laudable sense of unity and superior taste to creatively orchestrate the nine pieces of The Long Slog, their sophomore feature album… In a certain moment they’re confronting Miles Davis with Medeski Martin & Wood; in the other, you may find the Red Hot Chili Peppers colliding with Incognito or Mahavishnu Orchestra.”
Our brothers at the Nick Maclean Quartet are today’s featured ‘Download of the Day’ on AllAboutJazz.com! So make sure to CLICK HERE for a FREE DOWNLOAD of the 8th track of their album – Elasticity of Time and Space – a time-warping exploration of jazz and hip hop!
Alayne McGregor at OttawaJazzScene.ca wrote a fantastic review about our recent Ottawa performance! Make sure to read it here. Also a huge thanks to Brett Delmage for taking some truely stunning photos of the event!
